Soprano Vocal Range

The soprano is the highest singing voice. The typical soprano range runs from C4 (middle C) to C6, two octaves, and the low extreme is roughly A3. Most soprano roles stay below C6, and some coloratura roles reach F6. Treat these notes as a guide, because sources differ slightly.

What is the soprano voice like?

The soprano is the highest voice type, and its tessitura (the part of the range where the voice sits most comfortably) lies higher than all other voices except the rare sopranino. Most soprano roles in opera do not go above C6, although several standard roles call for D6 and some coloratura roles reach F6.

In choirs the soprano part is the top line, usually sung by women and children. A soprano voice is not defined by one high note: teachers also listen for timbre, vocal weight and where the voice changes register.

What are the soprano subtypes?

  • Coloratura soprano
  • Soubrette
  • Lyric soprano
  • Spinto soprano
  • Dramatic soprano

These five subtypes are based on range, tone colour (timbre), vocal weight and agility. The coloratura soprano has the highest tessitura of all.

How do I know if I am a soprano?

Find your lowest and highest comfortable notes with the free test, then compare them with C4 to C6. Range is only one factor: where your voice is comfortable most of the time (tessitura) and the colour of your sound (timbre) matter more. If you are unsure, a voice teacher can classify your voice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the soprano vocal range?

The typical soprano range runs from C4 (middle C) to C6, two octaves. The low extreme is roughly A3. Most soprano roles do not go above C6, though several call for D6 and some coloratura roles reach F6. Different sources give slightly different limits, so use these as a guide.

What is the highest note a soprano can sing?

In written opera roles, most stay at or below C6, several standard roles ask for D6, and some coloratura roles reach F6. Rare voices sing higher still, for example in the whistle register, but those notes are not part of the typical soprano range.

What is the difference between a soprano and a mezzo-soprano?

Mezzo-sopranos typically sing from A3 to A5, a little lower than sopranos at C4 to C6, and the two ranges overlap. Teachers also weigh tessitura (where the voice is comfortable) and timbre, so a range test alone cannot decide between them.

Can a man be a soprano?

Men do not normally sing in the soprano range in their chest voice. Some sing that high in falsetto; in classical music they are called countertenors, and only a few very rare voices, such as male sopranos, reach it. In contemporary music, tenor is often the better label.

Am I a soprano if I can sing a high C?

Not necessarily. Many voices can reach one high note. Voice type depends on the whole range, on where the voice is comfortable for most of a song (tessitura), on timbre and on where it changes register. One stretched note is not enough to decide.

How do I test whether I am a soprano?

Take the free test on this site: sing your lowest and highest comfortable notes and compare them with C4 to C6. If your range is centred around those notes, soprano is the closest match. A voice teacher can confirm it, because range is only one factor.
