Vocal Range Test: Find Your Range in 1 Minute

A vocal range test finds the lowest and highest notes you can sing. Press start, sing your lowest comfortable note and then your highest, and this page shows both notes, your range in octaves and a likely voice type. It runs in your browser and never records or uploads your voice.

Vocal range test

  1. 1. Press start and allow the microphone.
  2. 2. Sing your lowest comfortable note and hold it for about two seconds.
  3. 3. Sing your highest note and hold it. You will see your range, octaves and voice type.
Test mode

Your voice never leaves your device. The sound is analysed in your browser and is not recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

How does the vocal range test work?

The test listens through your microphone and measures the pitch of your voice about thirty times a second using the YIN method, a standard pitch-detection algorithm. A note only counts when you hold it steadily for a moment, so squeaks and background noise are ignored. The sound is analysed in your browser and discarded.

Example result: lowest note A3, highest note A5, 2.0 octaves, 24 semitones, closest voice type mezzo-soprano. Yours will be different.

What is a vocal range?

Your vocal range is the span of notes you can sing, from your lowest to your highest. It is usually measured in octaves, and notes are named by a letter and an octave number, so middle C is C4. Voice teachers normally count notes in the modal register used in speech and most singing, and you decide whether to include falsetto.

Which voice type fits which range?

Typical ranges are listed below. Voice type depends on more than range, so use this as a guide. See the vocal range chart for notes, MIDI numbers and frequencies.

SopranoC4–C6
Mezzo-sopranoA3–A5

How do I get the best result?

  • Use a quiet room and hold the microphone about a hand’s width from your mouth.
  • Warm up first, and stop if your voice feels strained.
  • Hold each note steadily instead of sliding past it.
  • If the test does not hear you, raise the sensitivity slider or check the live pitch detector.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal vocal range?

There is no single normal range. Untrained adults often manage about two octaves when they sing from their lowest to their highest note; one study of 100 adults measured a mean singing range of 24.8 semitones. Trained singers may reach more, and the notes depend on your voice type.

How many octaves is an average voice?

About two octaves is the figure usually quoted for untrained singers, which is 24 semitones. A study of 100 adults found a mean of 24.8 semitones. Your own result may be smaller or larger, and clear, steady notes count for more than a single squeak.

Is the vocal range test accurate?

It is accurate enough for a good estimate. The test uses the YIN pitch-detection method on your microphone signal and only counts notes you hold steadily. Room noise, a poor microphone or a very quiet voice can still cause errors, so repeat the test in a quiet room.

Does the test record my voice?

No. Your microphone signal is analysed live in your browser to find the pitch, and the sound is never recorded, saved or uploaded. The page contains no code that records or sends audio. When you stop the test, the microphone is switched off.

Is my range the same as my voice type?

No. Range is only one factor. Voice type also depends on tessitura (where your voice is comfortable), timbre (the colour of your sound) and where your voice changes register. The type shown here is an estimate from your lowest and highest notes.

Should I include falsetto and head voice?

It is your choice, but be consistent. Many vocal teachers count mainly the modal register, the one used in speech and most singing. If you include falsetto or whistle notes, your range will look wider and the voice type estimate may be higher than your natural voice.

Why does the test need my microphone?

To measure the pitch of your voice you have to let the page hear it. The browser asks for your permission first, and you can refuse. The test works with the microphone built into a phone or laptop, although a headset microphone in a quiet room usually gives cleaner results.
