Lesson Mode: Live Notes, Warm-Ups and Saved Ranges

Lesson mode is a free set of tools for singing lessons. It shows the note being sung in very large letters for a projector, plays warm-ups and scales with a reference tone and marks each note hit, near or miss, and keeps students’ ranges only in this browser. Nothing is recorded or sent.

Live note on the projector

Press start and sing. The note, its octave and a tuning meter are shown large enough to read from the back of a room. Press Projector view to fill the screen.

sing a note

Lowest – · Highest –

The microphone sound is analysed in this browser tab only. It is not recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

Warm-ups and scales

A reference tone plays the pattern, then the student sings it back. Each note is marked hit (within 30 cents), near (within 70 cents) or miss. A note sung an octave higher or lower counts, and is labelled. Each step moves the pattern up or down a semitone.

How to sing

Starting note C3 suits most men, C4 most women and children. Sing along only with headphones, or the microphone hears the tone.

Choose a pattern and press Start warm-up.

    Vocal range test

    1. 1. Press start and allow the microphone.
    2. 2. Sing your lowest comfortable note and hold it for about two seconds.
    3. 3. Sing your highest note and hold it. You will see your range, octaves and voice type.
    Test mode

Your voice never leaves your device. The sound is analysed in your browser and is not recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

    Saved ranges

Ranges you save with “Save range on this device” after a test are kept in this browser’s local storage, on this device only. Nothing is sent to a server, so they do not follow a student to another device or browser.

No saved ranges in this browser yet. Run the range test below the warm-ups and press “Save range on this device”.

How do I use lesson mode in a lesson?

Put this page on the classroom screen or projector. Use the live note for pitch matching and to show whether a held note drifts flat or sharp. Run a warm-up pattern from a comfortable starting note, and let the screen mark the notes while you lead. Test a student’s range with the vocal range test and press “Save range on this device” to compare it with the next lesson.

The patterns are in a major key: the 5-note scale sings degrees 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1, the triad 1-3-5-3-1, the arpeggio 1-3-5-8-5-3-1, and the sirens glide smoothly up a fifth or an octave and back. Reference tones are tuned in equal temperament with A4 at 440 Hz.

Lesson outlines and tips are on the page for singing teachers. If a student is tired or hoarse, skip the high and low extremes that day.
